An Iconic Peace

Muhammad on a camel, and Jesus on a donkey, greet the prophet Isaiah.

Here is an 'icon of peace,' drawn long before the beginning of the current 'cartoon war.' This remarkable image is taken from a 14th century MS of the Ilkhanate empire in Iran and Iraq. Clearly, that "medieval age" was a much more tolerant time than our current "enlightened era" - a time of real respect and honest dialogue among the three, great, Arbahamic faiths. God willing, we will move beyond 'cartoon wars' one day, and again start to draw pictures of religious co-existence.

I am in complete agreement that respectful, insightful, and healthy dialogue MUST happen if we, as a world family are to understand eachother. The tensions between all extermist nations are direct results of their ignorance and the failure of us all to free ourselves from the binding restraints involved with religious dogma, and a revival of the "because it is written in the Koran" / "Because the Pope says so" attitude which is so easy to cling to in tense times.

Only through making ourselves totally aware to the importance of faiths other than our own shall a whole truth be born of such petty tension.

I find it funny that a cartoon of all things has us thinking like this...It is about time such tensions were addressed. Perhaps a few of the talking heads of academia / politics both in the US and abroad could benefit from a dose of the sunday comics!
